Although a non-smoker, Clay died Tuesday at home of lung cancer. Born in Giltner, Nebraska, the 5th and youngest child of Mary P. and Claude E. Dawson. Served in the US Navy 1941-1945 in the South Pacific on the USS Indianapolis, USS Guadalcanal, USS Franklin, and the USS Bennington. Married in 1944 and survived by his wife of 63 1/2 years, Helen L. Carter of Giltner and Boise, Idaho. Retired from US Postal Service in 1984. Brothers: Earl and wife Evelyn and Adrian (deceased). Sisters: Virginia Davis (deceased) and Chattie Hopingardner. Stepmother Marguerite (deceased), half-sister Claudia and half-brother Albert. Children: James R. and wife Mary, Danny G. and wife Cheryl, Rodney W., and Rickey C. Grandchildren: Kacie S. (deceased), Stephanie R., Ashley S., Matthew A., Carly D., David W., and Amy C. Clay's love and sense of humor will be deeply missed by his family, "adopted" son George Dettra, and his many friends. The family would like to thank the wonderful people of Optimal Hospice Care for all their care and support. Visitation 1-5 p.m. June 15, graveside service 11 a.m. June 16, Hillcrest Memorial Park.
