MATTIE LOU MATTHEWS, 87, of the High Point Terrace neighborhood in Memphis, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Mrs. Matthews was born in Sardis, MS on August 10, 1920. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Herbert C. Matthews and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ford Smith. She was a devoted Christian, member of Leawood Baptist Church, and she was homebound for the past 8 years. Her commitment to family, friends, and the surrounding neighborhood was recognized in her everyday life. Her daughter and dear friends are thankful that she entered Heaven where there is no more pain and no more heartache. She leaves one daughter, Janie L. Matthews; one brother-in-law, Carless Morris; and many close friends. She was a strong believer in the Disabled American Veterans Association and the Franklin Graham Ministry, and was an avid supporter to both causes. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, and the funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel.
