Marine Lance Cpl. Perales was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Caroline. He died from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar province. Perales was a "mortar man" but had been performing other duties because the area was relatively peaceful. Javier always earned good grades in school and was very active in his church. He graduated from San Elizario High School and soon after joined the United States Marines. A plan was in place from the time he joined the military – his goal was to help his family so his mom could quit working. Javier was a deeply religious man who didn't like to go out to parties, was very serious and very responsible.
