FROM THE BUTLER CITIZEN July 23, 1909
"Mrs. Elizabeth McCandless, one of the oldest residents of the county and the oldest member of the United Presbyterian church of this city, died at her home in Butler township yesterday afternoon at four o'clock, following a brief illness. The deceased was the widow of the late Ex-Judge Abram McCandless, who served one term as associate judge of this county during the '80's and was in her 90th year. Mrs McCandless was born in Westmoreland County and was the daughter of John Johnston, one of the pioneers who settled in this section of the state. The greater part of her life was spent in Butler County.
Three sons and four daughters survive as follows: George McCandless of Bellvue, Howard McCandless of Butler Township, and Abner McCandless at home. Misses Mary and Anna at home and Mrs Matilda Stehle (Staley) , and Mrs. Kate Cole of Pittsburg. The funeral wil be held Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at two o'clock in the afternoon and interment will follow in the South Cemetary, this city."
