Hutchens Obituary

John W. [H.] Hutchens age 65 died at his home near Auburn Wednesday night from Brights disease. Mr. Hutchens was a veteran of the Civil war having been a member of Co. F 123 Ill., one of the regiments composing the famous Wilder Brigade. He is survived by his wife and twelve children. The funeral will take place today at 10 o’clock at Auburn. Burial in Auburn cemetery.

John Henry Hutchens, son of Jackson and Eliza Hutchens was born at Lexington, Clark County, Ind., Sept. 29, 1841 and departed this life March 16, 1910 at his home in Auburn Township aged 65 years, 5 months and 17 days.
When the Civil war broke out Mr. Hutchens, then 18 years old, responded to the call for volunteers, enlisting in the 123rd Illinois infantry. He saw much of active service, and was severely wounded at Selma near the close of the war. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn., June 28, 1865, the war having closed before the expiration of his term of enlistment.
He was married March 24, 1867 to Sarah A. Brossman. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The sons died in childhood. His wife, Sarah A. dying Dec. 3, 1881, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Jane Shannon, April 30, 1882. To this union were born nine children, four sons and five daughters, all of whom are living except Grace, who died in childhood. Those living are Elmira Weidner and Martha Shannon of Onawa, Iowa; Stella Claypool of Marshall; Rebecca Nicholson of Grandview; Theodocia Birchfield, Emma Nicholson, Frank, Charles, Effie, Fenton, Beulah, Harlan and Ernest Shannon, a stepson, who resides at West Terre Haute, Indiana. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife and children, an aged father, one sister, one brother, twenty grandchildren and a great number of other relatives and friends.
