William Glenn Shalz oldest child and only son of Joseph Nicholas and Mary Helen "Baird" Shalz was born in Colby, Kansas January 10, 1918. Dr. Lowis and assistant nurse Etta Coover were attendance. His father worked for Frank Louis who owned a garage in Colby. In May 1918 the family moved to Gem, KS where a sister Esther Marvel was born March 18, 1919. The attending physician was Dr. V.C. Eddy and the nurse Ms. Ulrich. The family again moved, this time to Brewster, KS where identical twin girls, said to be one of the first set of twins born in Thomas County, were born. Ruth Elaine and Ruby Eloise were born December 3, 1920. Dr. Lowis assisted by Mrs. Hollenbeck was attendance. The family grew up in Brewster attending school there, all playing in band and orchestra and Glenn being on football and basketball teams. The children had many memorable trips with their maternal grandmother, Fannie Baird in her Model "T" Ford Sedan. Some of those trips were to: Topeka, Kansas, her former home to visit the state capital, to Colorado Springs, CO to ride to the top of Pike's Peak, a ride up Mt. Mantiou in the cable car, a visit to the "Cave of the Winds" and a climb up "Seven Falls". There were also many camping and fishing trips with her. One especially remembered trip was a week at Scott Lake and Park in Kansas. Their mother and father flew from Brewster to have supper with them.
In 1925 Glenn's father Joe purchased the first airplane to be owned by anyone in Thomas County and became an outstanding pilot. The next year Glenn then 8 years old was credited with being the first person in the area to make a trip to Denver, CO and return in the same day. He flew out with his father and returned by car with the Evan Knudson family. In September 1931 Glenn's father, Joe was killed in a plane crash at Quinter, KS leaving the mother to support and raise the 4 young children. Glenn, being the oldest and a boy, became the "head of the household". He worked at the local theater, had a garden and sold produce and worked on farms during the summer months. While in high school he worked as janitor at the Brewster State Bank thus starting his career as a banker. He graduated from Brewster High School in 1935. In 1936 the Brewster State Bank consolidated with the Thomas County National Bank of Colby. Glenn stayed on in charge and did all clerical work until all business was closed out. In June 1937 he became a bookkeeper at Symns-Shaffer Mercantile in Colby. August 21, 1938 he left his position to go on an extended trip to the west coast later returning to work for Foster Lumber Company of Atwood, KS. He also worked at Gem, Ks and Rexford, KS when those yards were phased out.
He met Thelma Lewis the oldest and one of 9 children of Don and Martha "Rather" Lewis of Atwood, KS. They were married October 13, 1940 in Goodland, KS. She was a rural school teacher teaching in Rawlins County. He started work at the Thomas County Nat'l Bank so they moved to Colby. Thelma continued teaching in Rawlins County.
