Thomas Holland departed this life April 29th, 1851 at 10 1/2 oclock AM. Aged 59 years 1 month and 9 days. Funeral sermon on the next day by Rev. A. Bradshaw of Tennessee

Thomas Holland came through this area of Lawrence County, Alabama during the Indian War in 1812. He came back in 1814 with 1 slave and built 1 room of a log house. Thomas Holland went back to South Carolina to get his wife, his mother and sisters and they came to Alabama to start a new life.

Thomas Holland was in ill health and rode over his plantation and stuck his walking stick in the ground and told his family that was where he wanted to be buried. When he died they found his walking stick and buried him there. It is now known as the Penny Cemetery. He was the first one buried there.

Thomas Holland and Charity McCrary married in Laurens County, South Carolina on January 12, 1812 and had 8 children - Eunice, Permelia, Rosina, Rezin Pinkney, Spencer, Hyanthy, Richard O., Robert Madison Holland.

After Charity died in Nov 1831, Thomas married Sarah Winslow Davidson Woods on July 12, 1832 in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. They had 2 children -
William Franklin and Sarah Thomas Holland.

Charity is buried in the Holland Cemetery and Thomas Holland is buried in the Penny Cemetery with Sarah buried next to him in an unmarked grave.
