Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Egidio Vagnozzi entered the Vatican Minor Seminary before heading to the Pontifical Roman Seminary and later to the Pontifical Lateran Athenaeum, earning doctorates in philosophy, theology and canon law. Ordained priest on December 22, 1928 by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val, he was appointed staff member of the Secretariat of State and named Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness on May 1, 1932. Staff member of the apostolic delegation in the United States of America between 1932 and 1942, he was named counselor of the apostolic nunciature in Portugal in 1942 and later of the nunciature in France in 1945. Appointed Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on December 23, 1945, he served as staff member of the delegation for the establishment of diplomatic relations with India between 1947 and 1948, serving as chargé d'affaires of the Holy See before the new Indian government in New Delhi from June till August of the latter year. Pope Pius XII elected him archbishop of the titular see of Mira and appointed him apostolic delegate in the Philippines on March 9, 1949, with Vagnozzi receiving his episcopal consecration on the following May 22 in Rome from Cardinal Adeodato Giovanni Piazza OCD. Named the first apostolic nuncio in the Philippines when the latter country established diplomatic relations with the Vatican on August 9, 1951, and successively apostolic delegate in the United States of America on December 16, 1958, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of June 26, 1967 with the deaconry of San Giuseppe in via Trionfale. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals from June 30, 1979 until his death, the latter being sudden, with the Cardinal allegedly found dead on his apartment floor while in the midst of a bank audit which included the IOR depository, it soon became the subject of speculations in a number of publications related to the abrupt death of Pope John Paul I. Exposed in the oratory of the basilica of San Giuseppe in via Trionfale, his body was temporarily buried at the Campo Verano Cemetery of Rome until a definitive tomb was constructed at the basilica of San Giuseppe in via Trionfale, his title, in March 1983.
