KOUTS -- Levi Z. Birky, 82, retired farmer and father-in-law of Mayor Elden Kuehl, died Wednesday at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, after an illness of seven weeks.
Born in Lund, Kan., June 3, 1892, son of John C. and Magdalene (Zimmer) Birky, he moved to the Kouts area from Hopedale, Ill, where on April 10, 1918, he married Emma Bechler, who survives. He was a member of Hopewell Mennonite Church.
Besides the widow, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Elden (Lois) Kuehl and Iris Birky, both of Valparaiso and Mrs. Cephas (Mary Jean) Troyer of Goshen; five sons, Eldon, Orville, Willis, Wendell and Merlyn, all of Valparaiso; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Kipfer of Rolfe, Iowa; four half-brothers, Albert Birky of Shipshewanna, John Birky of Hopedale, Menno Birky of Peoria, Ill., and Simon Birky of Tremont, Ill.; three stepbrothers, Chris Nafziger of Albany, Ore., Dan B. Nafziger of Hopedale and William Nafziger of Peoria; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hopewell Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the Mennonite Cemetery.
Friends may call at Kosanke Brothers Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Friday.
