Benjamin Mott was born October 10, 1871, to Menander and Jane (Fordyce) Mott near Barnesville, Ohio.

Coming to Iowa at the age of 16, he found work and a home with the Nick Gooch family near Avon. He also worked for his Uncle Lamoine Mott at the Mott flour mill (Falcon Flour). Later he went to Runnells, rented a farm and brought his widowed mother from Ohio to live.

On September 25, 1893, he married Winifred Casady, who was a dressmaker in Runnells. She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane (Turnipseed) Casady of Summerset.

In March of 1894 they moved to a farm near Stuart in Guthrie County where they lived for four years and their three oldest children, Florence, Harold, and Catherine, were born.

In March of 1898 they moved by train to Warren County to farm near Summerset and then to Scotch Ridge in 1900. Their children Helen, Worth, Lee, Thomas and Marie were born in Warren County. Ben loved the farm and was rewarded for his diligence and hard work, by becoming one of Warren County’s outstanding farmers. He took pride in fine horses and cattle, and for 50 years took his livestock to Chicago market by train, and he rode in the caboose.

Ben and Winnie celebrated their golden anniversary on September 25, 1943. Mrs. Mott died June 1, 1945, and the following year Ben retired and made his home with his children, the last four being with his daughter, Florence Hull, where he died June 24, 1961.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, seven brothers and sisters, and two sons, Worth and Lee. Those surviving him were his six children, Florence Hull, Helen Rothfus, Marie Cummings, Harold and Thomas Mott, all of Carlisle, and Catherine Caulkins of Collins; 20 grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren.
