Sarah Jane Fordyce was born June 12, 1829, in Ohio, the daughter of Lemuel Fordyce and Sarah Mount. She married Menander Mott on September 4, 1848, in Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio.

Menander died in 1876. Earlier, in 1868 Menander's brother Lamoine and his family moved to Polk County, Iowa. Then, in 1877-1878 Menander and Sarah Jane's son Benjamin, at the age of 16, moved to central Iowa. Sometime thereafter Benjamin brought his mother to Iowa to live.

In 1890, when Sarah Jane filed her application for a widow's pension from Menander's Civil War service, she stated her address was 316 East Raccoon Street in Des Moines (four blocks south of Court Avenue on the east side of the Des Moines River across from what is now the parking area at Principal Park, formerly Sec Taylor Stadium). Later records in the pension file show her address as Runnells, Iowa.

Sarah Jane Mott died at the home of her son Benjamin, in Allen Township, Warren County, Iowa, on February 20, 1906. She was nearly 77 years of age.
