Austin retired in 1973 after 25 years at Potlatch's Lewiston mill, much of it in the specialty department. He was a cut-off saw operator at the time he retired, but had also worked as a knot sealer, ripsaw, operator, straight line matcher, and car loader in the department.
He explained in the retirement interview that the specialty department produces a board which can be used as though it were No. 1 grade from scraps of white pine and cedar edge-glued together, clamped for a time, and then planned.
Austin was born Nov 7, 1916, in Maynard, Ark., to Elvie C and Dora Austin. He grew up and attended schools there and then farmed in Illinois and Missouri for a short time.
He married Sarah E. Nelson on Jan. 1, 1946, and moved to Lewiston with his bride the same year. He was hired by Potlatch Forests, Inc., to work at the Lewiston mill in 1948.
Austin attended the Warner Alliance Church and was a member of the International Woodworkers of American
He was survived by his widow, a daughter, L. Dorine McKenna of Lewiston; a son, Lloyd N Austin of Everett, Wash; four sisters, Gladys L Austin of Corning, Ark, Eva W Ellsworth of Flat River, Ark, Daisy M Moore of Riverside, Cal, and Essie L, White of Granite City, Ill. Four brothers, Freeman, W Austin of Saxton, Mo, William F Austin of Granite Falls, WA, Elbert E Austin of Seattle, WA, and Richard T Austin of St Louis, Mo, and five grandchildren, a brother and sister preceded him in death.
Burial will be at Normal Hill Cemetery.
