Gladys Marie Adkins, a long time resident of Auburn, died November 7, 2006, at Tacoma General Hospital. She was 76.
Gladys was born July 19, 1930, in Klum, ND, to John and Kathryn Walz. She was educated in a one-room school – First thru Fourth Grade on one floor and Fifth thru Eighth Grade upstairs. The family left North Dakota and moved to Cashmere, WA in 1943, to raise apples and cherries. She married Kurly Hasson in 1949. While living at Scenic, WA, two of her children, Sherryl Rene' and Ahmed Curtis "Butch" were born. Gladys moved back to Cashmere in 1954, working as a waitress at the Cascadian Hotel and packing fruit in the packing sheds. She entered the Wenatchee Beauty School and graduated in 1960.
She married Douglas G. Adkins and they moved to Auburn, WA in 1961. While living in Auburn, two of her children, Michael Douglas and Kelly-Glenn Elizabeth were born. Gladys opened her beauty shop at Green River Terrace Nursing home in 1968, retiring after 17 years in 1985. For the past 20 years, Gladys had volunteered at the First United Methodist Church preparing the Monday Community Supper. She was a member of the Eagles and Red Hat Society. She enjoyed rubber stamping, crafting, but most of all, she enjoyed being a Grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Kathryn; her brother, Harold Walz (1928-2003) and sister, Lenora Viola Walz Peterson Wilton Soyejima (1922-2002); and her husband of 36 years, Douglas G Adkins. Gladys is survived by her sons, Michael Douglas Adkins (Michelle) of Auburn and Ahmed Curtis "Butch" Hasson of Nevada; daughters, Sherryl Rene Pfaff (Eugene) of Bonney Lake and Kelly-Glenn E. Adkins (Dennis) of Auburn; and her five grandchildren, James Richard Ellis, Michael Douglas Adkins, Jr, Robyn Marie Sharrah, Amber Marie Ellis and Mitchelle David Adkins all of Auburn; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and her many friends and extended family members. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.
A Memorial Service was held November 18, 2006, at Price-Helton Funeral Home in Auburn. Internment will be at Cashmere Cemetery on December 9, 2006, at 2:00 p.m.
