Hammond Advertiser - August 31, 1944
The war department notified Mrs. Catherine Phillips Troup of South Hammond last Friday, that her son, T/5 Kenneth T Troup, 32, was killed in action in France on August 4. Kenneth, a popular youth of this community, was attached to a medical detachment battalion.

He was a son of Mrs. Catherine Phillips Troup and the late Thomas C Troup, former residents of Carthage. He was born in Richland May 26, 1912 and was graduated from the Carthage High school where he was a member of the football team and won medals in numerous track meets. He attended Clarkson college two years, where he was affiliated with the Alpha Chapter Sigma Delta fraternity.

T/5 Kenneth Troup entered the army March 10, 1941, being assigned to Camp Upton, Long Island, to Camp Wolters, Texas and Fort Snelling, Minn. In October 1941 he was released, being over 28 years old, but he was recalled in December of the same year.

After reporting at Fort Niagara he was assigned to the Fourth Armored Division at Pine Camp and remained there with the unit until September 1942 when they were transferred to Tennessee and then to California for Desert maneuvers. The unit was last stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas, before leaving continental United States. They arrived in England in January 1944. The division is believed to be one of the units to move into Paris with the French forces of the interior, and is known to have been in the thick of the armored fighting since the break-through of Brittany.

A letter was received recently by the family, written August 2. In it Kenneth wrote: "I know how you are all wishing for a letter, yet it still goes, 'no news is good new.'. Letter arrive by large stacks now, but I only get time for you and Howard (a brother in service in Italy).

"Will write the others later from somewhere in France. Everything is OK. ...watch runs, pen writes as you can see, but lost clip. Hope it all ends soon. Really appreciate the lighter now for I use it all the time at night. Your letters all help and I wish I could write often. Will have lots to tell later. Don't worry and hope for the best. Love, Ken."

Surviving Kenneth are his mother, a brother, PFC Howard G. Troup, stationed in Italy, a sister, Gladys C. Troup and a brother, Charles Lawrence Troup, residing in Hammond.
