Joseph was born in Lithuania. He married Constance Koseraiente and they migrated to the USA via Scotland where Joseph mined coal with his brother William Grinkevich. The brothers moved with their young families to Shamokin, getting jobs at the collieries and living in Coal Township. Joseph and his family, daughters Helen (later Mrs Ignatz Wrublewski), and Violet(later Mrs Leo Shulskie), and sons Alex, Joseph, and William lived at 1209 Pulaski Avenue.

St. Michael the Archangel was the family church and a source of hope for many immigrants. Pneumonia and influenza took Joseph from his loving family quickly. He was survived by Constance and three of his children- Helen, Joseph, and William, and by three grandchildren. His brother William Grinkevich of Dorchester, Wisconsin and sisters Eva Visneski (Wisneski) of Shamokin, and Anna Manikas of Chicago also survived him.
