Poet. The daughter of a renowned physician, she was a graduate of Oxford High School and Oxford's St. Anne College. Often considered one of the most notable British poets of the later 20th century, her poems drew inspiration from her personal experiences, including a stay in a mental hospital, as well as from her Roman Catholic faith. Her most notable works were Poems (1953), her first published book; A Way of Looking (1955); The Sonnets of Michelangelo (1961), a translation; and Collected Poems 1953–1985 (1986). While her works were lauded for exemplifying straightforward, technical speech, scholars also note her often tender, emotionally sensitive tone. Her accolades include an Arts Council of Great Britain Prize (1953), a Somerset Maugham Award (1955), and a W.H. Smith Literary Award (1987). She was awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 and received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Durham University in 2001. She also produced some children's poetry, edited multiple anthologies, and published studies and critiques of other poets' works.
