Leva Ann Whiteside was born February 12, 1900, south of Niantic, Illinois, a daughter of William Modrel and Hattie Myrtle Davis Whiteside. She attended Sanders School, Christian County, Illinois, finishing in the 8th grade. She grew up on a farm with her three brothers and two sisters in Macon County, Illinois. She was a member of Berea Christian Church, Niantic, Illinois, where she was baptized Sept. 25, 1916.

Leva married Virgel A. Hawk on March 12, 1918. Virgel and Leva had four sons: John William, 1919, Virgel Aden Jr. 1920,Roland Eugene,1924 and Garry Lee,1933.

A farmer, Virgel rented a farm down on the Sangamon river southeast of the village of Mechanicsburg, Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1935 and later was able to buy it. Virgel served as Guard at Illiopolis War Plant in WWII and Leva worked making ordinance on "K" Line. Their eldest two sons served overseas in WWII.

Leva was a member of the American Legion Auxillary, the Order of Eagles, Aerie 437 Auxillary and Woodside Township Women's Club. The family attended Mechanicsburg Christian Church.

Leva and Virgel had a lot of friends, went dancing frequently and on vacations to warmer climates in the winter. They worked hard all of their lives and provided a warm home for sons and grandaughters alike. After his death in 1975, Leva moved to Springfied in 1978. She died at age 86, on January 4, 1987, due to complications following a traffic accident. Survivors included two sons, Rod and Garry, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one niece and several nephews.

Funeral services were held at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. DeWayne Bolin officiating. Burial was in Long Point Cemetery.
