Various accounts indicate that Thomas Gooch may have served on both sides during the Civil War. He was captured in Little Rock? He was a member of the Arkansas Calvary for the Union. After the war, he spent time in Louisiana and near Dallas, Texas. In 1870, he settled in the Los Nietos valley in Los Angeles county. He acquired a ranch of 90 acres and began raising oranges and English walnuts. He was the vice-president of the Los Nietos and Ranchito Walnut Growers Association. Years later after his death, his ranch residence was converted into the first City Hall for Pico Rivera.
