Josephine Snouffer was the daughter of Joseph David and Mary E. (Unknown) Snouffer of Emmitsburg, MD. On August 15, 1871 she married Levi E. Byers and moved to New Oxford, PA to raise their family. She had 10 children, but only 6 survived infancy: Mary Mamie (Lookenbill), Charles Henry, Bessie C. (Withers), twins Francis B and Levi Lawrence, and Philip M. In 1917, she succombed to pneumonia and her obituary read:

GETTYSBURG COMPILER, Saturday, March 17, 1917:
Mrs. Josephine Byers, of near New Oxford, died on Wednesday at her home after an illness of about eight weeks from pneumonia, aged about 63 years. She is survived by her husband and four sons and one daughter: Phillip and Frank Byers, at home; Lawrence Byers of New Oxford; Charles Byers of Abbottstown; and Miss Bessie Byers at home. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at y o'clock by Rev. Walter E. Garrett, pastor of the Reformed Church in New Oxford and interment will be made in the New Oxford Cemetery.
