Biography: Julius Priester arrived in the United States from Germany in 1854. He joined the 26th Iowa Infantry Regiment in 1862 for the Union during the American Civil War. This unit was one of those that participated in William T. Sherman's notorious March through Georgia. Priester finished his military duty in Washington D.C. on June 6, 1865. He stayed in a disabled veteran's home in California between 1909-1912 due to an absess on his back and was discharged at his own request; he was about 75 at this time. His claimed residence at this time was in Oregon, where he died, leaving behind a wife, two sons and four daughters.
