Attached to the 1st Marines LCpl Goodwin was participating on a road sweep for enemy explosive devices on route 4 in the Dien Ban District of Quang Nam Province. As the team of Marines were moving along the road in the vicinity of the Nhi Kinh village complex there was an explosion causing a six by six foot crater in the road killing LCpl Goodwin by the blast and fragmentation wounds from the hostile device.
