"In 1950, Louis' children gave a street clock to the City of Alma in honor of him and his wife, Emma (Thoes) Palenske. Later in 1967, their son, Fred, gave money to purchase and renovate the two stone buildings that are now the Minnie Palenske Zwanziger Museum and Palenske Hall across the street. These gifts illustrate in a substantial way, the close feelings of the Palenske family for Alma and Wabaunsee County. Louis was a photographer, having galleries in McFarland, Burlington, and Osage City. He opened a music and bookstore in Alma, worked at building his own banking business, was a land agent for the Santa Fe Railroad, and in 1896, served one term in the Kansas House of Representatives. His parents were Friedrich and Caroline (Gongoll) Palenske, who emigrated from Germany by way of New Orleans."
