Robert "Doc" Newell was an American Rocky Mountain fur trapper and later, politician in Oregon Territory. He was nicknamed "Doc" for his frontier doctoring abilities and medical knowledge. A native of Ohio, he served in the Provisional Government of Oregon and later was a member of the Oregon State Legislature. He also served the US government as Indian Agent at the Nez Perce Reservation, Idaho, in his later life.

He married a Nez Perce (Nimi'ipuu) Indian woman in about 1834 in the Rocky Mountain territory where he was a fur trapper. He renamed her "Kitty." The had 3 sons there: Francis 'Frank' Ermatinger Newell, William Moore Newell and Marcus Whitman Newell. With his family he migrated to the Willamette Valley of Oregon Territory prior to 1842 and settled at Champoeg, Marion County. There, sons Robert and Thomas Jefferson Newell were born to them. Kitty died at Champoeg in 1845 at age 25.

He married second, Rebecca Newman on 28 June, 1846 at Oregon City, Oregon Territory. They had at least 11 children between 1847 and 1867 in Oregon and Idaho.

The family moved from Oregon to Nez Perce, Idaho prior to 1863. At Fort Lapwai, he worked as an interpreter for US government and was instrumental in the negotiations that resulted in a new treaty with the Nez Perce in 1863. In recognition of his effort, the treaty included a gift from the Nez Perce of a sizable plot in present-day Lewiston, Idaho (Source: The Oregon Encyclopedia, Robert Newell). On July 23, 1868 he was appointed by the US government as Indian Agent for the Nez Perce Reservation.
