Sunday morning, just at two o'clock, Mrs. Nancy S. Barnsback entered into rest, after an illness of a little more than a week. She had attained the advanced age of 80 years, 11 months and 18 days. Her illness dated from Celebration Day. She was down town that day to witness the program and also helped the ladies of St. John's in serving their dinner. The excitement of the day and perhaps something she ate caused her to be taken very sick and it was seen that she could not recover.
Mrs. Nancy S. Barnsback was born October 8, 1816, in Kentucky. When but a year old her parents, James and Diana Watt came from that state to Illinois, settling on a farm about three miles southwest of Troy. There she resided until on April 23, 1884, she was married to Wm. J. Barnsback, who lived in Pin Oak. The union was blessed with eight children: Henrietta M., Mary Mae, James F., Annetta D., W.W., Jane I., wife of J.N. McKee, G.F.J., and Nellie, wife of J.A. Vance, the latter four of whom survive. The husband died April 4, 1872, and Mrs. Barnsback continued to reside on the old homestead until January of last year when she moved to town and has since occupied a house in the east end, next to one of her daughters, Mrs. Vance.
Mrs. Barnsback was a famed entertainer and the hospitality of her home was made welcome to all. She was a christian in all that the word implies and from girlhood was an energetic and conscientious member of the Methodist church at Troy. Those who were so fortunate as to be numbered among her friends feel the loss they have sustained in her death.
The funeral took place this afternoon at St. John's. Rev. W.R. Ravenscroft conducted the services and a choir composed of Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Springer, Mrs. S.O. Bonner, Mrs. Dr. Thegenbaum and J.G. Dolicain sang, Miss Lizzie Brinkamn, at the organ. The interment was in Oaklawn. The pall bearers were Wilkie Barnsback, Al McKee, Jake Barnsback and Will Vance, all members of the family.
