Sally was the fourth child of James W. and Diana (Stice) Watt and was raised in the Troy area of Madison County, Illinois. She married Nathaniel Minter in Madison County on Apr. 28, 1842.

Nathaniel and Sally were the parents of two children, a son Marion who died in 1855 and a daughter Sarah Ann who married William Baird.

In the 1850 census Marion is living with his Aunt Nancy (Watt) Barnsback. Sarah is living with her grandparents, James and Diana Watt. In the 1860 census, Sarah is back living with her father Nathaniel who married Marina Caroline Gardner in 1854.
