Thomas F Cooney, as Old and Respected Resident of Overton Precinct Answers the Call of the Grim Reaper
The young may die, and the old must. This is a very old saying, but also a very true one, as was exemplified last Monday morning when Thomas F Cooney, an old and respected citizen of Overton precinct, passed away.
Deceased was born in County West Mead (Westmeath), Ireland in February 1832.(Son of Frances Cooney and Mary Whelehan) When a young man he came to the United States and in 1872,(the family actually moved to Dawson county about 1877) with his family came to Nebraska and located, in Overton precinct, Dawson county, his occupation being that of a farmer. His wife preceded him to the great beyond fourteen years ago. He is survived by nine children and twenty-seven grandchildren, his children being Christopher B. Cooney, the eldest, who more than thirty years ago left home and no trace of him has since been found; Frank C. Cooney, of Overton; Mrs Mary E Ryan of Overton, Thomas J Cooney of Overton; Patrick E Cooney of Oshkosh; John Cooney of Axtel, Mrs Nellie Wells of Overton, and Mrs Fanny Saulsbury of Overton.

Thomas Francis Cooney was the son of Francis Cooney who died in Mullingar 8 June 1859 and Mary Whelehan who died in 1857.

Thomas Cooney and Bridget Bryan married Jan 1858 in Mullingar County Westmeath, Ireland.
They left for America after Richard was born in 1861.

In 2017, I identified James Christopher Cooney as the missing son Christopher Cooney. This was done with DNA. I then sent for the Social Security application for James Christopher Cooney, dated 8 May 1937. James Christopher Cooney identified being born in West Meath (Westmeath) Ireland - he gave the date of 1855 not 1858 for his birth year. (I think he changed the date when he married so he and Delia would be the same age.) He identified his father as Thomas Cooney and his mother as Mary Brien (not Bridget).

Sept 15, 1883 - Bridget Brien Cooney placed an ad in the Boston Pilot 1831-1920 - Looking for her son Christopher Cooney. She spelled her last name Bryan at that time. "Of Christopher B. Cooney, son of Thomas and Bridget Cooney (maiden name was Bridget Bryan), who left Braceville, Grundy County Illinois, about 8 years ago. Is about twenty-five years of age; low, heavy set. Information of him dead or alive will be thankfully received by his mother. Mrs. Bridget Cooney, Overton, Dawson County, Nebraska

June 2021 - I made a new discovery today. I found a second obit for Thomas Cooney. I am posting both obits. The family knew about Christoper Cooney in Chicago. The first obit in the Dawson County Pioneer 27 Dec 1912 page 1 is incorrect "He is survived by nine children, the eldest being Christopher Cooney the Eldest, who left home thirty years ago left home and no trace of him has since been found:" The obituary in "The Overton Herald" published 10 Jan 1913 page 1 is correct "Eleven children were born to this union, Christopher Cooney of Chicago IL.; Richard, Frank, tom,Mrs Ryan Mrs. Saulsbury and Mrs Wells of Overton, Edward Cooney of Oshkosh and John Cooney of Axtell....He also was survived by 37 grandchildren." This obit said 11 children but only name the nine children.
