John Matin Truman came to Iowa about 1855 becoming the owner and operator of a grain elevator in Luana. When the Civil War was precipitated on the nation he promptly tendered his service in defense of the Union, by enlisting in early 1861, as a member of an Iowa volunteer regiment, with which he proceeded to the front and with which he had continued in active and valiant service until the close of the war. He then resumed his active operations in the buying and shipping of grain and continued his residence at Luana until his death. Mr. Truman was a stanch supporter of the cause of the Republican Party.
On November 26, 1868, John was united in marriage to Hellen Mary Burgess and to this union were born three children: Maude Ellen Truman, Jay Wellman Truman and Hattie Helen Truman.
