The Farmers' Vindicator (Valley Falls, Kansas) Friday, 19 April 1918 Nortonville Items Uncle John Groves as he was familiarly known, pre-empted a home 6 miles northwest of Nortonville in the early 50s and made his home there continuously since that time, until a few years ago when he divided his time between his son's home in DeKalb, Mo. and his daughter at Lawrence, Kansas. Mr. Groves passed through Nortonville last week on his way from Lawrence to DeKalb, Mo. He suffered an attack of acute indigestion shortly after he arrived at his son's home. He was taken to a St. Joseph hospital where he died. He was in his 89th year. His wife died several years ago. He leaves three children. Marion who lives on a farm adjoining the home place, Henry of DeKalb, Mo., and Mrs. James Stockwell of Lawrence, Kansas. The funeral was held from the Pleasant Grove church on Monday afternoon. Burial in the Pleasant Grove cemetery by the side of his wife.
