Lifetime Alaskan and Wasilla resident L. Marie Hulke, 67, died quietly at her home, with her family nearby, on Dec. 2, 1996, following a long illness with cancer. A funeral was held at St. John Lutheran Church, 440 E. Elmwood in Palmer, with the Rev. Jonathan Rockey officiating. A graveside committal service followed at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frieda Smith, Butch Hulke, Virginia Tolin, Jody Willing, Paul Willing and Mike Smith.
Mrs. Hulke was born March 24, 1929, in Kananak. Her early years were spent in Dillingham. She resided in Anchorage in 1946, and she and her husband, Eldor, farmed in Minnesota from 1947 to 1953. She lived in Wasilla for more than 43 years. She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 30, enjoying the company of hundreds of family members and friends. Her family wrote, ''For over 20 years, Marie's cheerful greetings met shoppers at Teeland's Country Store. She was known among family and friends for generosity and volunteer work. Her family and those in need were always first in her heart. Many know her for her years as Wasilla's election chairman, canvas board chairman, and city election judge (1974-1994).'' She was an active member of the Valley Garden Club of Wasilla and the Wildflower Garden Club of Anchorage. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer and belonged to VFW Post No. 9365 Auxiliary since 1954. She served as Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader while her children were young. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd D. and Ellen C. Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Eldor of Wasilla; children, Frieda Smith of Carlinville, Ill., Floyd ''Butch'' Hulke of Wasilla, Virginia Tolin of Great Falls, Va., and Jody Willing of Anchorage; her 13 grandchildren, Veronica and Randall Smith, Lynette, Heather, Kari, Robin, Laura, Timmy and Skye Hulke, Rachel Thompson, Tony and Jason Tolin, and Taylor Willing; four great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Frank Smith of Wasilla, Joe Smith of Trapper Creek, Dave Smith of Wasilla and Lee (Ethel) Cooper of Littleton, Colo. The family suggests that memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to Hospice of Mat-Su, 950 E. Bogard Road, Suite 133, Wasilla 99654-7172. Arrangements by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory of Wasilla.
