MONTICELLO, Iowa - Clarence L. "Shorty" Breitbach, 78, of 613 W. Fifth Street, Monticello, formerly of Cascade, died at 12:46 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with Rev. Daniel Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin's Cemetery, Cascade, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m.

Mr. Breitbach worked in construction with John Lasche for years, then drove truck for Falstaff beer for 13 years, and later owned and operated the former Shorty's Tap in Cascade for several years.

He was born July 29, 1922, in Washington Mills, son of Leo and Matilda (Takes) Breitbach.

He married Hazel Behrends on May 29, 1945, in Cascade; she died on April 13, 1976. He later married Helen (Husmann) Meier on December 29, 1976, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello.

He received his education at the former St. Martin's school, Cascade. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Cascade Knights of Columbus-Council 930, a member of the Cascade American Legion-Post 528, and a member of the Eagle's Club of Guttenberg. He was an avid fisherman, he loved to play cards and go camping.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Breitbach, of Monticello; five children, Jerry (Connie) Breitbach, of Cascade, Sharon (Dean) Meyer, of East Dubuque, Ill., Lois (Rick) Scott, of Epworth, Shirley (Tom) Keating, of Center Junction, and Vickie (Les) Holub, of Cascade; three stepchildren, Larry (Nancy) Meier, Lon (Nancy) Meier, and Karen (Ron) Steiner, all of Monticello; 14 grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leona (Joe) Menster, of Cascade, Marguerite Burkart, and Viola (Arthur) Hackbarth, both of Manchester.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, a sister and two brothers-in-law.

A Clarence L. "Shorty" Breitbach Memorial Fund has been established.
