Carl Monroe Bishop died Wednesday morning at Duke Medical Center. Born October 26, 1910, in Durham, to Nathan Marvin Bishop, Sr. and Annie Whitaker Bishop. Graduate of Durham High School class of 1930. Dean Wilburt C. Davidson came to the High School to interview five senior boys who had excelled in science courses and were not entering college. Dr. Davidson offered them positions in the soon-to-be opened Duke University Medical Center. On July 1, 1930, Carl M. Bishop began a career there which would last 46 1/2 years. A technician associate of the original staff in the Department of Pathology, he retired as chief of the photographic lab. He was a biological photographer, and received training at Eastman Kodak's Medical Division, Mayo Clinic, Bausch and Lomb, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He furnished illustrations for seventeen medical textbooks and countless medical journals. The meticulous care taken and thoroughness shown in his performance brought praise for excellence from all who received his productions. He held memberships in the National Biological Photographic Association and the Quarter Century Club of Duke University, and was a charter member of the Duke University Retirees Association. He was also a member of the Bethesda Jolly Group.

He was an active member of Yates Baptist Church since 1938, and served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Committee Member. He was an avid gardener, beloved grandfather, faithful husband, and devoted father.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Kathleen Cooley Bishop; a daughter, Linda B. and husband William S. Hoyle of Rocky Mount; sons, C. Randolph Bishop and wife Judi and Neil B. Bishop and wife Chris of Durham, grandchildren, the Rev. William S. Hoyle, Jr. of Kenly, Megan B. Moore and husband Steve, of Decatur, Ga., Kathleen L.H.
