Francois Lérigé dit Laplante and Marie Louise Mallet signed a marriage contract in St. Louis on 28 May 1797 in order to obtain approval from the Spanish Government. They were married on 30 May 1797 at the Catholic Church of St. Louis (Old Cathedral). The original marriage contract was written in Spanish and was recorded 50 years later, on 12 Jun 1847 in St. Louis French & Spanish Archives Volume 3, page 59. An English translation was also recorded. The original document is in Collection A1376 "Saint Louis Archives, 1766-1804" at the Missouri History Museum Archives, St. Louis. A copy of the marriage contract, the English translation, and the church record are posted on this memorial.
