Helen E. Papendick, 91, of Riverview Independent Living Center in East Peoria, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Proctor Hospital.

She was born March 22, 1917, in Lincoln to James and Elsa Starstrom Nelson. She married Robert L. Decker June 21, 1938, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 1988, in Peoria. She married Lyle W. Papendick on May 30, 2001, in Peoria.

She is survived by her husband, Lyle of Fort Meyers, Fla.; her children, Robert L. Decker of Rock Island, Richard C. Decker, Patricia A. Decker and Janet S. Kreeger, all of Peoria, Judith Decker-Angel of Grand Rivers, Ky., Donald (Delores) Bower of Creal Springs, Ill., and Raymond Brooks of Bloomington.

She is preceded in death by one son, Thomas E. Decker; four brothers, Arthur Nelson, Irv Nelson, George Nelson and William Nelson; and three sisters, Grace Neuhaus, Gertrude Cummings and Mildred Shride; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

She was one of the founding members of Peoria Association of Retarded Citizens (PARC), devoting her life to the betterment of its mission. She contributed to the beginning of Community Workshop and Training Center (CWTC) and to its growth and betterment. She was a member of Proctor Hospital Womens Auxiliary and a member and past president of Transportation Club Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in various positions and attaining the highest position of Worthy Matron. She was a member, serving actively in the Daughters of the Nile. She was a member and officer of the fraternal organization, The White Shrine.

She never wavered in her efforts to advance the cause of children and adults with disabilities, having a special daughter, Patricia, who benefited so greatly from her efforts.

Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
