Helen L. Whitla

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home for Helen L. Whitla, 92, Topeka, who died Monday, May 3, 1993, at a Topeka nursing home.

Mrs. Whitla had worked for 10 years for the Kansas State Department of Education. She previously had taught home economics at Edgerton High School and Severy High School.


She was born Dec. 28, 1900, at Emporia, the daughter of Charles H. and Mary Nystrom Johnson, and was graduated from Emporia High School and Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia. She lived 25 years in Emporia and 27 years in Topeka.


Mrs. Whitla was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka and Wellsville Chapter No. 406 of the Order of Eastern Star in Wellsville.


She was married to Lowell R. Whitla June 29, 1923, in Emporia. He died in 1978. A son, Mark R. Whitla, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Sue Helen Jones, Hillsboro, Ohio; a grandson, Jesse Whitla, Topeka; and two greart-grandchildren.


Graveside services will be at noon Saturday in Edgerton Cemetery. Mrs. Whitla will lie in state after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminstrer Presbyterian Church, 1275 Boswell, 66604.
