George Dallas Albert's "History off the County of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania" pages 551 and 552:
Daniel Shupe took over the Mt. Pleasant flour milling business after his fathers death in 1847. Daniel was public-spirited to a marked degree; he was good to the poor; was a genial, whole-souled, pleasant companion; a kind and sympathizing friend, always ready to oblige a neighbor or stranger; he was upright and fair in his dealings; he was generous to enemies and charitable to all. He was a member of the United Bretheren Church, was without hypocrisy and had many Christian graces. He had been a life-long friend of Col. Painter. About 1861 or 1862 Daniel was experincing financial trouble when his friend James R. Wade bought into the business with six thousand dollars. In the 1867 Atlas Daniel was listed as a Merchant distiller and grain dealer in Mt. Pleasant. He had labored twenty years to have a railroad built to Mt. Pleasant. And finally in 1871 a branch road was built from Broad Ford on the Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad. Daniel was also one of the pioneers in the oil business.
In addition to his farm he conducted extensive lumber manufacturing plants, a tannery, a distillery, a steam flouring mill in Mt. Pleasant, a general store, a cigar manufactory, a commission business in Pittsburgh, continued the freighting business on the 'Old Pike' until the railroads came, was a pioneer in the oil business and in the
importation of high-grade horses. "He purchased one of the first three Clydesdale horses ever imported to this country. At the time of his death he owned several large farms and 74 houses at Mt. Pleasant and its immediate vicinty. He also shipped large quantities of lime of his own manufacture, & after 20 years persistent effort succeeded in having the Baltimore & Ohio extend their line from Broad Ford to Mount Pleasant. He was one of the stockholders of the road...& one of its directors until his death". Also mentions his honesty, generosity & community service - U.B. Church, Democratic party, school board, etc
