1916 "Abbe -Abbey Genealogy In Memory of John Abbe and his Descendants" by Cleveland Abbe and Joseph Genung Nichols:

44. EBENEZER* ABBE, JR., son of Ebenezer^ and Mary (Allen) Abbe,

born July 27, 1708; resided in Windham or North Windham, Conn.

Married February 22, 1729-30, ABIGAIL CARY, probably daughter of Joseph

Gary, jr.

One account gives her name Abigail Soale and still another says she was Abigail Goodale, daughter of Isaac Goodale of Salem

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Justification for Ebenezer Abbe, Jr (born 27 Jul 1708) married to Abigail Goodale, daughter of Isaac Goodale:

An Abigail Goodale, who was the daughter of Isaac R Goodale and Mary Abbe, and who married Ebenezer Abbe, Jr. To date, I have not found a birth record for this Abigail Goodale.

What provides us with the connection for Abigail Goodale, daughter of Isaac R Goodale and Mary Abbe, married to Ebenezer Abbe are the following:

1. Marriage Intentions:

a.Ebenezer Abbe and Abigail Goodale "intended" to get married according to the Salem, Massachusetts record, Feb. 7, 1729/30. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui- content/view/29453662:2495.

(Source Information: Ancestry.com. Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011. Original data: Town and City Clerks of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Vital and Town Records. Provo, UT: Holbrook Research Institute (Jay and Delene Holbrook).)

b. A record for the intention to be married gives the same Feb. 7 and is supposedly on FHL # 0761210, according to the Ancestry source but where oh where on that FHL microfilm? (I have reviewed it more than 3 times.) The Ancestry location/citation is: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/301751:7853

And the FHL location is: Records of marriage, birth and death - v. 3-5 1650-1865 FHL# 761210; Salem, Massachusetts. City Clerk.

c. Finally, there is the 3rd documentation of intention to marry for Ebenezer Abbe and Abigail Goodale. This was prepared in 1894 by Salem Publishing Company, Salem, MA with all the intention of marriage in Salem, Essex, MA;

2. Marriage:

Ebenezer Abbe and Abigail Goodale were married on Feb. 22, 1729/30, as recorded by the Windham Clerk of Court. The Windham Clerk of Court probably asked Ebenezer for his wife's maiden name and wrote it afterwards (Windham, Connecticut, British Colonial America, Records of births, marriages, and deaths, v. A-I, 1692-1893, FHL 1376454; Vol A; Image 81 of 818; P. 121; Town Hall, Windham, Connecticut, Windham County Clerk; 1376454).

The "marriage intentions" for Ebenezer Abbe and Abigail Goodale along with the actual date of the marriage Ebenezer gives the Windham, CT City Clerk are only part of the justification for Abigail Goodale, daughter of Isaac Goodale.

3. Isaac Goodale's will

Abigail Goodale is listed as Abigail Abbe:

Isaac's will can be found: Essex, Massachusetts, Essex County, Massachusetts, probate records and indexes 1638-1916, FHL 875131; vols. 320-322, Book 20-22, 1732-1781; P. 503-504; Image 750-751 of 784; Massachusetts. Probate Court (Essex County), Massachusetts. Court of Insolvency (Essex County).

4. Sale of land from Ebenezer Abbe and Abigail Goodale

The land sale states Abigail Abbe is the daughter of Isaac Goodale. The land is sold to Jacob Goodale, Abigail's brother. So not only can we verify Abigail through her father, but her brother, Jacob.

Essex County, Massachusetts, FHL866047; Volume 78; P173; Image 474 of 586. Record of Ebenezer and Abigail Goodale Abbe, daughter of Isaac Goodale, dec'd, land sale to brother Jacob Goodale. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9ZZ-BC4L?i=473&cc=2106411&cat=209907

5. Probate court record for Isaac's inheritance goes to Abigail Abbe's heirs (this gives us a date of Abigail's death)

Massachusetts, Essex County, probate records, 1538-1880, FH4481675; Image 43 of 217; Massachusetts. Supreme Judicial Court (Essex County), Essex County Supreme Judicial Court. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-YSQH-HVD?i=42&cat=1931591

Why? Because the date for Abigail Abbe death is closely related to a Salem probate record filed 24 Jun 1745 where there is a change of assignments for Isaac Goodale's will. It includes several of Isaac Goodale's children. For Abigail Goodale Abbe it is stated as "Abigail Abbe heirs" not Abigail Abbe. This tells us Abigail Abbe has died. In fact, on 21 Jun 1745, a son, Samuel Abbe was born. One can surmise Abigail Abbe died in childbirth or soon after, as the probate record assigned to her heirs was only 3 days after the birth of her son, Samuel Abbe. 1796/1797 death is not the death for Abigail Goodale Abbe.

(There been a date for the other Abigail Goodale's death of 1796 on Find A Grave with the correct birth of 03 Jul 1714 for daughter of David Goodale. This is Abigail Goodale Wilkins, wife of Jonathan Wilkins, as there is a will for this Abigail Goodale Wilkins about the 1796-1797.)

This, then, is the final documentation and justification that Abigail Goodale is the daughter of Isaac Goodale Goodale and Mary Abbe and wife of Ebenezer Abbe, Jr. It is NOT Abigail Savage or Abigail Cary or Abigail Goodale born 03 Jul 1714.
