Leo George Hietter, 101, of Peoria, formerly of Princeville, passed away Monday, March 25, 2024, at his residence in Independence Village.

Leo was born on January 21, 1923, in Princeville to Leo Thomas and Catherine (Weese) Hietter. He married Ruby M. Streitmatter on February 14, 1946, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Princeville. She preceded him in death on October 21, 1998.

Surviving is one brother, Jim (Mary) Hietter. He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Frances and Rose; and two brothers, Thomas and Earl.

Leo was involved in many community activities. He was a long-time member of St. Mary of the Woods church, as well as a trustee for 30 years. Leo was also on the Board of Directors for the Princeville State Bank. He served as a trustee on the Princeville Township Board. Leo was a 25-year volunteer on the Akron-Princeville Fire Department. He last worked as a service manager at Graves Chevrolet for 38 years. Leo was involved in six invasions while serving in the United States Army as a Quartermaster Corporal in the 45th infantry during World War II. He was stationed in Africa, Italy and France. A highlight for Leo later in life was participating in the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.


Burial with military honors will follow in Streitmatter Cemetery in Princeville.
