Daughter of Joseph W. Shatto and Eliza M. Parton, married 27 May 1855. Chariton Township, Schuyler County, Missouri.

Married Lewis Franklin Alexander 27 December 1874. Schuyler County, Missouri.
Children:
Phoebe Maude Alexander - 15 March 1874

Martha was born into a large family of 8 children, not all of whom survived to adulthood. Her father was a farmer whose Shatto roots lie in Pennsylvania, also of a large family, who came to Missouri from Illinois in the 1850's. Like many families in border states, the Civil War divided the family: four brothers fought for the South and one with the Union. Her father may have fought but on which side and which unit is unknown; he appears in the 1890 census veteran's schedules indicating service from Missouri but all other spaces are blank. These schedules were for Union survivors and the blanks imply he began giving information but things came to a halt if, perhaps, it came out he was with the confederacy.

Within a few years of marriage Martha and husband Lewis moved to Brown County, Texas, where they are found with daughter Phoebe, born in Texas, and living next door to her father Joseph W Shatto and step-mother Nancy McEndree. Lewis is a farmer, a vocation he followed throughout his life.

By 1900 the family had moved to Lewis County, Washington and then by 1910 to Sedro-Wooley, Skagit County, Washington, where they spent the rest of their lives. Lewis is found as a widower, living with a half brother James in the 1920 census. Interestingly, their moves are the same as their daughter Phoebe and husband Newton Handy and similar to other family members from the Alexander and Shatto families out of Missouri into the Pacific Northwest.

This underscores the general observation that families often moved together because they depended on each other. For instance, Martha's brother, Franz Seigel Shatto, is living with Martha and Lewis in 1910.

It appears her gravemarker, shared with husband Lewis, was created years after the fact, based on family estimates as it is exactly of the same style and fabric as that of her daughter Phoebe and son-in-law Newton Handy in the same cemetery. The year dates are not consistent with her death certificate.
