Ervin is the son of Frank F. and Grace Bell Sutton Binkley. He married Bonnie Bernice Boyer on Aug. 19, 1933. They had two boys: Eugene F. and James Lee Binkley.

Bonnie re-married after Ervin's death and is not buried with him.
