HUCKINS - GEORGE

Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Huckins of Chester, announce the marriage of their daughter, Guila Faye, to Dr. J. L. George, son of Mrs. Ida George of Chester, on Wednesday, May 1.

Rev. C. H. Chenoweth performed the ceremony. The couple was attended by the sister of the groom and brother of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Huckins of Chester. Little Shirlee Huckins, sister of the bride, was ring bearer. Dorine and Roma Lee Huckins, cousins of the bride, acted as flower girls.

The spacious living room was decorated with a pink and white canopy and white bells with baskets of pink and white roses on each side. Before the ceremony, Mrs. Donald Cramer sang "I Love You Truly." Mrs. Dewey Van Cleef played "Lohengrin's Wedding March," and "Love Dreams" during the ceremony.

The bride was dressed in white embroidered net with white net pleated ruffles and matching accessories.

Mrs. George is a graduate of the University of Nebraska where she joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority. For the past two years she has been Relief Administration of Republic County, Kan. The groom is a graduate of Kansas State College at Manhattan, where he affiliated with Farm House fraternity, Gramma Sigma Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi, honorary. He has been engaged in government work in Oklahoma the past nine months, but recently received an appointment as field veterinarian in Bureau of Animal Industry at Indianapolis, Ind., where the couple will make their home.

A reception was given for the wedding guests. The table was beautifully decorated with a pink and white wedding cake and lighted pink tapers on a lace cloth.

Dr. and Mrs. George left immediately after the reception for a trip to Kansas City, and St. Louis before going to their new home.

The bride wore a navy blue cerpe (sic) suit with matching accessories.

Obituary - John Lester George

John Lester George, son of John and Ida George, was born March 1, 1906, at Norton, Kansas. He passed away June 30, 1959, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Concordia, Kansas, at the age of 53 years, four months.

Early in his childhood the family moved to Chester, then to Gentry, Arkansas, and later to Mulberry, Kansas, where graduated from high school. He attended Pittsburg Teachers College one year and taught school for a year before entering Kansas State College in the fall of 1928. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1932 with high honors, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. George entered veterinary practice in Chester in 1932 and was still practicing here at the time of his death. He interrupted his practice for 18 months in 1934-35 to work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma and Indiana.

He was united in marriage with Guila Huckins, May 1, 1935. They have one son, Richard Allen of the home.

A member of the Nebraska State Veterinary Medical Association since 1933, he served as a member of the executive board for two years and as president of the organization in 1950. He was appointed to the State Examining Board in 1950 and served two terms in that capacity. He was also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In 1953 Dr. George was appointed Nebraska State Veterinarian and served in that capacity until resigning due to ill health in 1958. He served as a member of both the state and national Brucellosis committees and as a member of the National Leptospirosis Committee. He was serving on these committees at the time of his death. His passing will be mourned by many professional friends over the state and nation.

Gov. Robert Crosby commissioned him an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy in 1954 for dedicated service rendered the state. Dr. George was active in local civic affairs, having served as president of the Chester Community Club, and Chester Lions Club. He was a member of the Hebron Rotary Club and Chester Masonic Lodge No. 239. He served eight years on the Chester Village Board and was Mayor of Chester for four years, and also served on the Chester School Board several years.

For the past ten years he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the State Bank of Chester. He was a member of the Chester Methodist Church, being Chairman of the Official Board at the present time. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees. He taught a Sunday School class of boys for several years and was at present teaching an adult class. He enjoyed sports, being an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, and a fan of all team sports. For years he umpired baseball games in this section and had served as a team manager.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a half-sister, Minnie; and a brother, Gerald, who died in military service in World War II. Those surviving include his wife, Guila; son, Richard Allen; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Huckins; two brothers, Lloyd of Detroit, Mich., and Lyle of Grand Island; half brother, Lee George of Belleville, Kans.; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the Chester Methodist Church on Friday morning, July 3, at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Duane Hutchinson officiating. Rev. Richard Nesmith, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. Floyd Haifleigh at the organ. Honorary casket bearers were: E.P. Anderson, D.V.M.; C.B. Schwab, D.V.M.; P.R. Noller, D.V.M.; John Todd, L.C. Shaw, D.V.M. Pallbearers were Ray Peake, Dewey Van Cleef, P.A. Clabaker, D.V.M.; E.L. Metcalf, D.V.M.; Eugene Nesmith and R.W. Wilson. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery with the Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Home in charge.
