Son of JOHN HENRY BETTES, a tailor and his wife EMILY (nee GELLENDER). He was baptised on 8th November, 1882 at St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

He worked as a tailor and married ANNIE GERTRUDE HOLMES in 1907. They had three children, none of which survived to adulthood.

On the day of his death a storm had blown in and he went to find his little daughter FLORENCE who had been playing outside. As the heavy rain began to fall he and Florence took shelter under a tree on Wandsworth Common, along with several other people who had been caught out by the rain.

A lightening bolt struck several trees including the one he and his child were under. It killed them both instantly.

After a funeral service at nearby St. Mark's Church, he and his daughter were buried in Wandsworth Cemetery. They shared a polished elm coffin, with brass name plate on the lid.
