Walter Gilbert, 68, retired Ogdensburg police officer, died suddenly last night at 7:15 (Nov. 7, 1952) in St. Joseph's Home, where he has resided the past three years.
Mr. Gilbert had been in his usual good health and earlier, that day had been down in the city's business section.
For 25 years, he served with the police force, retiring eight years ago. He was stationed many years at the St Mary's Academy crossing popularizing himself with many young people.
Born in Ogdensburg March 12, 1884, Mr. Gilbert was the son of Henry and Ella McMillian Gilbert.
About 52 years ago, when he was 16, he married the former Miss Louise Amo in a ceremony performed by the late Rev. P. O. LaRose at Notre Dame Church. Mrs. Gilbert died a number of years ago.
Surviving his death are three sons, Walter Jr., Ogdensburg; Roy, Syracuse, and Leo, Rochester; four daughters, Mrs. John Small, Mrs. Douglas Bell and Mrs. Raymond Bouchard, all of Ogdensburg, and Mrs. Erno Hella, Burlington, Vt.
Also surviving are four half brothers, Henry Gilbert, Capt Anthony Gilbert, and Bernard Gilbert, all of Ogdensburg, and Warren Gilbert, Syracuse; 23 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Lalonde Funeral Home and at 9 from Notre Dame Church. Burial will be made in Notre Dame Cemetery.
