Oliver McMahon was born in Adams County, Ohio, Aug 14, 1819. His ancestors were from the north of Ireland, and settled early in Pennsylvania. His father was a soldier through the entire War of the Revolution. He moved to Albany, Illinois, in 1837, and engaged successively in farming, steamboating, general merchandising, including lumber, and finally banking. His home was demolished in 1860, but none of his family were fatally injured. In 1860, he purchased the banking building from Root Bros. & Co., of Lyons, and formed a co-partnership with W.M. Evans, in private banking, under the firm name of McMahan & Evans. In 1863, he, with others, organized the First National Bank of Lyons, which commenced business in August of that year, whith Jas.P. Gage, president; Isaiah Golby, vice-president; W.M. Goldy, cashier. In January of 1864 he and others transferred their interests in bank to Samuel Rand and associates, who had for years been at the head of the Lyons city branch of the State bank of Iowa. From this time he was engaged in various pursuits till May, 1867, at which time he re-purchased his interest in the First National Bank of Lyons from Samuel Rand and others, became a director June 10th of that year, and on January 12th, 1869, its vice president and financial officer. On Jun 19th 1881, he was chosen president of the bank, a position which he retained till the day of his death. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Lizzie Woodward, long a resident of Lyons; one daughter, Mrs. Alice Gabriel, of Garden Plain, Ill.; and one son, Chas L. McMahan, of this city, teller of the First National Bank.
