Ammann, age 92, of Highland, IL., died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL. He was born February 21, 1916, in Highland, IL., the son of Henry and Ella (Koch) Ammann. On August 7, 1937, he married Laverna L. Ammann nee, Wiese, who survives. Lester was born in Highland. At age four his mother died and he lived with his aunt Louisa Haberer for five years. He then lived with Oscar and Mattie Ammann on their farm at Millersburg, IL. He started work at Wick's Organ Company, then later became a carpenter in 1943, retiring in 1981. Lester worked for the planing mill in Edwardsville; for Korte Construction – building SIU office buildings, and the EvUCC. He volunteered in rebuilding the Square in Highland and was recognized by the Jaycees on 9/18/1977 for his work on the square. He enjoyed making furniture; decks, porches and other projects for his children. Lester enjoyed dancing in Germantown and Highland. He always had an immaculate car. He and his wife played bingo in the area. He was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Crhist. He was also a member of Brother of Carpenters & Jointers Local 1535 for 65 years. Survivors include wife Laverna L. Ammann nee, Wiese of Highland, Ill., son Dennis L. (Karen) Ammann of Ballwin, Mo., daughter Diane K. Chappel of Vandalia, Ill., grandchildren Julie E. (Patrick) Gribbon of Wildwood, Mo., Jennifer J. (Stephen) Berry of Chesterfield, Mo., Susan J. (Christopher) DePaul of Wildwood, Mo., Christopher J. Chappel of Collinsville, Ill., Sarah L. Ammann of Clayton, Ill., W. Ryan Chappel of Collinsville, Ill., Melissa D. Chappel of Naperville, Ill., Megan K. Chappel of Vandalia, Ill.; great-grandchildren Kyle P. Gribbon, Sophie M. Berry, Jack S. Berry, William D. Gribbon, Ethan C. DePaul; half sister Gail Kaufman of Victorville, Calif.; sister-in-law Fay Ammann of Selah, Wash. He was preceded in death by his father Henry William Ammann; mother Ella Ammann, nee Koch; sister Pearl Wick; half brother Charles Ammann; brother-in-law Cornelius Wick; brother-in-law Orville Kaufman. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, and from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Senior Pastor, Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery in Highland, Ill. Memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical United Church of Christ or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
