He ranks as Billboard magazine's single most popular country artist of all time. Some of his popular hits include, "The Cattle Call", "Make the World Go Away", and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye". In the 1950s, he began to reach beyond strictly country. He was on TV shows, including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and The Perry Como Show. In the '80s and '90s, he remained a popular concert draw.
