William McGowan was born ca 1841, in Bulter County, Pennsylvania to William and Jane (Maiden Name Unknown) McGowan. He married Amanda A. Sarber ca 1863 or 1864 in Bulter County, Pennsylvania, prior to their move to Blackford or Wells County, Indiana. They were living in Wells County in 1864.

One son was born of their union. Andrew E. McGowan was born 27 May 1865 in Wells County, Indiana. After the death of his mother in 1874 he lived with his step-father, Thomas C. Smith and his two half-brother, Sylvester C. and Harvey Anthony Smith. Later he chose his grandmother, Eliza Dufford Sarber as his guardian. He is a veteran of the Spanish American War. He died on 18 February 1905, and is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana, next to his grandparents, Aaron and Eliza Dufford Sarber. It is unknown if he left descendants.
