JOPLIN, Mo. — Finis "Uncle Buster" L. Gary, age 81, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 7:59 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at his home in Joplin, following a lengthy illness.

Buster was born on Dec. 2, 1926, in Waco, Mo., the son of the late Roswell Finis Gary and Margaret Hendry Gary.

He enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 4, 1944, he served in the Construction Battalions called the Seabees. Buster returned to the Joplin area from Branson, Mo., in 1998. During his working career, he had worked for OTASCO and later retired as a carpenter, working for Sam Walton building Wal-Mart Stores. After his retirement, he worked in Branson for Box Car Willie. He was a Baptist Deacon in Arkansas. He was also a member of the VFW.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Gary Key, of Arkansas; two brothers, Bob Gary and his wife, Angie and Denny Mellema and his wife, Patty; one nephew, Rob Gary; four nieces, Priscilla Brown, Christy Thiese, Tonya Bryant and Debbie Nash; great-nieces, Jamie Hirshey, Angel Brown, Amber Bryan and Cassie Purcell; great-nephew, Brandon Purcell; and many others.

He was preceded in death by one nephew, Randy Purcell; and one sister, Priscilla "Pat" Dean Purcell.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Macedonia Cemetery, Stella, Mo. Pastor Jim Spradlin will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rob Gary, Rusty Bryant, Erik Hirshey, Mike Forkner, Jake Bryan and Brandon Purcell. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home, of Webb City, Mo.
