Former Scio Blacksmith, Henry Anton Stepanek Buried Here Saturday
A large crowd was present Saturday afternoon at Franklin Butte Masonic Cemetery for the burial of Henry Anton Stepanek, 75, who passed away Wednesday morning last week in Coos Bay. Mr. Stepanek will be remembered as a long-time blacksmith in Scio in earlier years, on the present site of the bank building. He first bought a partnership with the then living-Pete McDonald, and later was sole owner. Different men worked with him, including his brother Ed, who still resides near Scio. After his wife's death in 1920 Henry Anton Stepanek sold his blacksmith shop and for 14 years was employed by the railroad before he moved to Coos Bay and bought a shop there and it is today equipped with much equipment. Ed Stepanek of Scio went to Coos Bay recently when his brother was stricken with illness and he remained with him for one week until he was in the hospital and the sudden cold weather caused freezing damages at his home here and he had returned home. Besides his brother, Ed of Scio, one sister, Mrs. Nettie Bartu, also of Scio survives, and as do two daughters, Mrs. Viola Delong of Coos Bay and Mrs. Wuanita Wood of Portland, also four grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildre.
