George Janssen Gerdes, son of Ado Schwitters Gerdes and Gesina Margaret Remmers, was born on October 2, 1902, at Garrison, Nebraska, and passed away Saturday, February 6, 1993, in Hebron.
He was baptized at Millerton, Nebraska, and confirmed at Garrison, Nebraska.
On February 28, 1934, he was united in marriage to Frieda Anna Lenora Koinzan. This union was blessed with five children. He earned his living by working as a farm hand until his marriage and then he went into farming on his own until retiring in 1967 and remained on the farm until 1980 and then moved into town.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Frieda, who died on February 16, 1983, and his half sister, Evelyn Berry.
Survivors include two sons, Don and his friend, Helen Boatman of Nelson, Nebraska, and George and his wife, Lucille, of Davenport, Nebraska; three daughters, Margaret Karnatz and her husband, Ray, of Davenport, Nebraska, Audrey Trowbridge and her husband, Robert, of Hebron, Nebraska, and Wanda Giebel of Hebron, Nebraska; one sister, Marie Gerdes of Rising City, Nebraska, one brothers, John of Bruning, Nebraska; halfsister, Elnora Hoffschneider of York, Nebraska; stepbrother, August Schultz of Falls City, Nebraska; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives, especially the Anderson family and his friends at the senior center.
George thoroughly enjoyed his family, children, grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and bowler. He spent many hours in his garden and loved his flowers.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 10, 1993, at 11 a.m. from Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska, with Pastor Donald L. Hunzeker officiating. Special music was provided by the family. Pallbearers were Kevin Trowbridge, Spencer Trowbridge, Brent Gerdes, George Gerdes, Brian Karnatz, Bruce Karnatz, Mitch Gerdes, Chance Gerdes and Bill Giebel. Interment was in the Davenport City Cemetery. Urbauer-Price Funeral Home of Davenport, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
