Anthony was born in Alsace-Loraine, Germany (the territory reverted to France at the Treaty of Versailles of 1919). His parents died when he was at an early age. He learned the masonry trade and immigrated to the US in 1854.

He settled first in Chicago, Illinois and then in Iowa.

He married Hannah Gebbers on April 28, 1859 in Lee County, Iowa.

Their children are John, Charles, Mary, Millie, and Frank.

The family moved to a farm near Elkton in 1882.
